Re: A Message of Support and Care
We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred yesterday in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Our thoughts remain with the families, students, staff, and the entire community affected by this devastating loss. Although this tragedy occurred outside of our district, we recognize that news of this nature can impact students, staff, and families here at home.
It is completely normal for children—and adults—to experience a range of emotions, including sadness, fear, confusion, or anxiety. Events like this can also be triggering for those who have experienced trauma or loss in the past. Please know that your child’s emotional well-being is our top priority.
We want to assure you that all students and staff in our schools are safe. Our highest priority is the safety of students and staff, and we continue to take every precaution to maintain safe and supportive school environments.
Schools are places of care, stability, and connection, and we are committed to ensuring that our students feel supported.
Our district is working closely with the Ministry of Education and Child Care and Safer Schools Together to ensure coordinated guidance and appropriate supports. School administrators and counsellors are available to assist students who may have questions or who may need additional support.
Information about available support services for students, staff, and families will be shared separately.
We encourage families to speak with their children in ways that are calm and reassuring. If your child requires additional support, please connect directly with your school.
The safety and well-being of our students and staff remains our highest priority.
Tracey MacMillan
Superintendent of Schools
